I don’t think there is a more unique truck than the Dodge Little Red Express. Manufactured from 1978-79, this unmistakable design took custom elements from the 1970’s and applied them to a performance D150 Adventurer pickup. The result was not only a visual delight but was also faster than the Corvette of its day. And that certainly got people’s attention.
This 1979 model has been with its second owner since February 3, 1981 when he traded a 1975 Duster and $3,300 for this truck (invoice included). That’s 40+ years of continuous ownership, during which time the paint and graphics were redone. Of course, you can’t talk about a Li’l Red Express without mentioning the dual exhaust stacks and stainless heat shields; they are probably the most defining design element of this truck. The wood accents add to the look as well. While the exterior shows some age here and there, it remains a great looking truck throughout. The 15” chrome wheels wear brand new Cooper Cobra tires front and rear.
The factory engine is the high performance EH1 360ci V8 with a few thousand miles on a rebuild. It remains stock with the exception of a Holley carburetor in place of the Thermoquad (which is included). Note the factory chrome valve covers and “360 Express” air cleaner. The drivetrain continues with an A727 automatic transmission and 3.55 rear end. Also present are power steering and power front disc brakes. Recent service includes a new cap and rotor, brake hoses, wheel cylinders, machined drums and rotors, and a new battery.
The black interior is original and in nice condition with a front seat that easily accommodates three people. The center seat cushion flips up to reveal a large storage compartment, while the center seat back can flip down and provide an armrest. The glove box offers good storage as well and also houses the fuse box and original owner’s manual. The dashboard offers a full set of gauges, AM radio, and heat/defrost controls, all of which work properly. The lights, turn signals, horn, wipers, and parking brake are functional as well. You don’t always get this on vehicles from this era!
You can’t help but smile when driving this truck. It has an outrageous look, is faster than you’d expect from a 70’s full-size pickup, and makes a great sound through the stacks. And you really get some stunned looks when people learn this Li’l Red Truck was a factory offering. Will we ever see such a thing again?
